Chargers Walk Off to End GCAA Play, Win 4th Regular Season Title in Five Years
James Wyatt Gatlin hit his second walk off homerun in two weeks to close out the 2025 regular season for the Georgia Highlands Chargers. The freshman's blast sealed a 13-11 victory over GCAA rival Gordon State and put an exclamation point on the Charger's fourth regular season conference title in the last five seasons. GHC clinched the league championship with four games left to play, but Head Coach Dash O'Neill knew those last few games would still be hard fought. "Our league is so competitive that we knew every game would be a battle. We play each other so much that there really are no meaningless games in our conference. I'm just proud of our team for the way they handled themselves this year and for how they've dealt with adversity."
The Chargers finish the regular season with a strong 42-10 record overall and a strong 21-7 mark in conference play. They finished five games ahead of their competition and continued an impressive run that O'Neill says started in the COVID season of 2020. "I think it really got going in 2020 before the pandemic shut us down. That was a special team that didn't get a chance to finish the year, but the players from that team went on to win the next two conference championships and laid the foundation for what we've been able to do for the first half of the decade." In the years following the pandemic, the Chargers have posted 218 wins against just 67 losses. GHC will spend the next couple of days preparing for the NJCAA Region 17 Tournament that begins on Monday in Tifton, GA at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. The Chargers will play their first game on Tuesday afternoon at 1PM against the winner of Monday's play in game between South Georgia State and East Georgia State. The winner of the Regional will travel to Tennessee to play the Region 7 Champion. You can watch broadcasts of all of the Regional games at www.jockjive.com.
