With the initial GCAA doubleheaders out of the way, the Chargers began the first of five series against in state rivals on Tuesday by hosting Andrew College in a doubleheader. The visiting Tigers wasted no time getting started, plating 4 runs in the top of the first inning after a costly GHC error with the bases loaded opened the flood gates. The Chargers would cut the lead in half on a 2 run home run off the bat of Joe Sutton in the bottom half of the inning, but 3 more errors in the game and timely hitting by Andrew led to 5 more runs. The Chargers went to work on offense with 6 runs of their own in the game, but their ninth inning rally took a hit when a Charger hit was erased after the umpire overturned his initial call. GHC still managed to push 2 runs across in the inning, but it wasn't quite enough to even the score. Conner Todaro added 4 hits to his tally on the season and GHC hammered out 14 total hits in the game. Palmer Sapp added a home run in the game and Sutton ended up with 3 RBI's.
In the nightcap, Andrew once again took an early 3-0 lead with 1 run in the second and 2 in the fourth. GHC's bats had been relatively quiet going into the bottom of the fourth when they woke up in a big way. Conner Todaro got things started with a one out single before a back to back homers from Trace Twardoski and Palmer Sapp tied the score at 3-3. Andrew reclaimed the lead in the fifth inning with a run, but once again the Chargers would draw even when Palmer Sapp drove in Todaro with a sacrifice fly to center field. With the score 4-4 after regulation, the game entered extra innings. Caleb Garner (4IP 5H 1R 0BB 4K) was sharp in relief and held the Tigers at bay in the eighth, but Andrew held serve in the bottom of the inning and the game went into the ninth. Matthew Silka came on in relief of Garner and tossed a perfect frame in the top of the ninth to give the Chargers another chance to push a run across. Max Kops led off the bottom of the ninth with a scorching line drive double to left center field, but Omar Daniels and Brandon Prince each lined out hard to outfield bringing Conner Todaro to the plate with 2 outs. Todaro was up to the task, lining an 1-0 pitch into right field for a walk off RBI base hit.
GHC moves to 29-5 on the season and 8-2 in GCAA competition. They will hit the road on Saturday to play the final 2 games of their season series against Andrew College. First pitch is scheduled for 2PM in Cuthbert, GA.
