As the summer comes to a close, several GHC baseball players and coaches will be returning home with a little extra hardware.
Sophomores Lavoisier Fisher (CF) and Gavin Harmon (OF/C) helped the Lima Locos of the Great Lakes League win their 6th GLSCL title, and both played key roles in the Loco's Success. Fisher was a GLSCL All-Star, hitting .293 for the summer with 9 doubles a home run and 14 stolen bases. Harmon tied for the team lead in home runs with 4 and finished strong hammering out a .300 average and 13 RBIs over the month of July. Both Harmon and Fisher were defensive standouts for the Locos as well, and they will be looking to make a big impact for GHC in 2020.
Another GHC sophomore, Josh Bennett (UT), torched the Ohio Valley league while playing for the Owensboro Riverdawgs. Bennett hit .385 in 96 at bats on the summer with 4 home runs, 11 doubles, and 29 RBI's while helping the Riverdawgs to a second place finish in the Eastern Division of the OVL.
Bam Thomas (1B), a redshirt freshman for the Chargers, had a strong summer campaign for the Piedmont Pride of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League, helping the Pride to a regular season championship. The big lefty, who hit .296 for the summer with 6 doubles a home run and 16 RBI's will play for the SCBL Championship this weekend.
A couple former Chargers are enjoying success this summer as well. GHC standout Bryson Horne belted out a .317 average and 5 home runs playing in the highly competitive Valley League this summer, and Brant Brown, a right handed pitcher in 2019, became the first GHC baseball player to play in the Cape Cod League. Brown finished his summer with a 2-0 record and a 2.00 era for the Falmouth Commodores.
Charger players are not the only ones making waves in the summer circuit, as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator Brock Moss steered the Strasburg Express of the Valley League to a regular season championship. Despite losing several key players, the Express went 26-16 during the regular season to win the Valley League North, and they are battling their way through the playoffs this weekend to try and bring home a post season championship as well. This is the second summer in a row that Coach Moss has guided a team to a regular season title.
Head Coach Dash O'Neill was proud that GHC was so well represented in the summer. "I'm really excited for these guys that they get to be a part of such quality leagues and organizations in the summer. They are out there competing against Division I athletes in a lot of cases and really representing Georgia Highlands is a fantastic way. As for Brock, I'm not surprised he's had another big summer, he does a great job and works his tail off year in and year out. We're really blessed to have a talented coach like him on our staff, and I can't wait for us all to get back together so we can go to work on 2020."
